I've cut back on my deer rifles to play with handguns and just have the 257s and my 30-06. Good Ole 270! Why? As far as factory ammunition goes, the definite edge goes to the .257 Roberts, as there are more choices than there are for the .250-3000. The .25-08 produces similar velocities to the .257 Roberts but has a much more efficient case design and is superior to the Roberts when used in short actions. If you have a preference for short action or long action, that could influence your decision. The hottest .243 Winchester factory load I was able to identify for the article The .243 Winchester: Its Capabilities as a Deer Cartridge specs out as follows. . Why would I want a rifle in 30-06 again when I have a Springfield M1A .308? I shoot a 7.5 pound 270 winchester with a midddling load of H4831 and a 130 bullet at about 2900FPS, I can tell the difference between this and a 180 at about 2900 out of a 300 WSM. Introduced by Remington as a production cartridge in 1934, based on wildcatter Ned Roberts’ design, the .257 Roberts is based on a necked down, 7x57mm Mauser’s case. With a case length of 1.912 inches and an overall length of 2.515 inches, it worked very well in the quick-handling Model 99, and on deer and similar-sized game, it worked perfectly. The ONLY difference I can tell is the size of the entrance hole, which really doesn't matter. I really like the 308 but I would go with the 257 Roberts.

This twist rate would be revised later to 1:10”, but initially it limited the cartridge. I've still got the Winchester. In the middle of nowhere ordering ammo online and getting it delivered in time to hunt the next morning is tricky. For whitetails only?......Then imo, go the 257. Oh I stray sometimes, but I always come back to the Bob. The .250-3000 Savage is the older of the two, being released in 1915 in the excellent Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle.

I had one in 700 Remington Classic that just loved 140gr Hornady boattails. For an "everything" rifle I really like the .270Win. However, Savage built the rifles with a 1:14” twist rate, limiting the bullet weights to the 87- and 100-grain pills, as the Peters Cartridge Co. loaded. Deer and 25 calibers is the ultimate proof of God's existence. Thanks for all the input guys! The .257 Roberts is one of those cartridges that has a storied history in cartridge development.
100 gr. The deer will not argue the difference but I am a bit more partial to the 257 just because I have more experience with it as I got one of. There are no flies on a good .25-06 Remington, but when it comes to the blazing quarter-bores, the .257 Weatherby Magnum holds a special place in the hunting fields. Very minimal recoil. My last two deer were 8 points.

This makes the Roberts a very good deer size game cartridge with low very tolerable recoil.
Winchester Power-Point. Noted for mild recoil, the .257 Roberts hits game animals with authority, and shoots flat. If a person doesn't handload I can certainly see where readily available ammo could make all the difference....but how many here shoot factory ammo? Posts: 6,064. north AL .

257 roberts vs 308

So Im looking at getting a 257 Roberts or 25/06 I noticed there is a about 100fps difference between them.

but recoil isn't bad.

Like that "New" model 70 you always shoot :P Or that "New" SKS. With that light rifle the Bob should have a little less recoil. The .257 is a wonderful round and the Ruger Ultral Light in that caliber would make a great all around rifle up to just about any sized deer. A fun gun to shoot all day because of the lack of recoil compared to a .308, which is a fine cartridge, but you said just for deer!!!
