This gives the galaxy a fluffy appearance, somewhat resembling cotton wool. Your browser or your browser's settings are not supported. This is the first time such a catastrophic event around another star has been imaged. NASA.gov brings you the latest images, videos and news from America's space agency. The telescope resolved roughly 30 fragments of the comet on 20 April and 25 pieces on 23 April. This image depicts a swirling spiral galaxy named NGC 2906. The STS-109 astronauts conducted five space walks to service and upgrade Hubble.

This image is one of the most photogenic examples of the many turbulent stellar nurseries the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has observed during its 30-year lifetime. Residing in the constellation Canis Major, the entire view is 109,000 light-years across, approximately the diameter of our Milky Way. The barred spiral galaxy known as NGC 4907 shows its best side from 270 million light-years away to anyone who can see it from the northern hemisphere. This is a new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope of the face-on the galaxy, displaying its beautiful spiral arms, wound loosely around its central bright bar of stars.

This method serves as a proxy for how they will observe Earth-like planets around other stars in search of life. The subject of this Picture of the Week, a spiral galaxy named NGC 1589, was once the scene of a violent bout of cosmic hunger pangs; as astronomers looked on, a poor, hapless star was torn apart and devoured by the ravenous supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy.

Hubble’s deep, high-resolution imaging shows ... Hubble discovers Black Holes in unexpected places. This is the first direct image of a star other than the Sun, made with the Hubble Space Telescope. Call for Artistic Creations: Let’s Say Thank You to Hubble! The cloud was produced in a collision between two large bodies orbiting the bright nearby star Fomalhaut. The black hole, named 3XMM J215022.4−055108, is indicated by the white circle.

This phenomenon allows astronomers to study remote galaxies that would otherwise be too faint to see.

This artist’s impression depicts a star being torn apart by an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH), surrounded by an accretion disc.

Almost like snowflakes, the stars of the globular cluster NGC 6441 sparkle peacefully in the night sky, about 13 000 light-years from the Milky Way’s galactic centre. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has provided astronomers with the sharpest view yet of the breakup of Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS). This Hubble Space Telescope image shows the massive galaxy cluster MACSJ 1206. Hubble has detected the presence of water vapor. A quasar emits exceptionally large amounts of energy generated by a supermassive black hole fueled by infalling matter.

This color image of the comet was taken on 8 August 2020. Hubble’s sharp view is giving researchers an updated weather report on the monster planet’s turbulent atmosphere, including a remarkable new storm brewing, and a cousin of the Great Red Spot changing colour — again. Pictured here is the region surrounding NGC 2525. This Picture of the Week, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows the galaxy NGC 4237.

This thin, rotating disc of material consists of the leftovers of a star which was ripped apart by the tidal forces of the black hole. The spiral galaxy NGC 2008 sits centre stage, its ghostly spiral arms spreading out towards us, in this image captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. It is a substructure of the gigantic Tarantula Nebula. Together with the Carina and the Vela constellations, it makes up an image of the Argo from ancient greek mythology. This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope depicts NGC 7027, or the “Jewel Bug” nebula.

This object is formally known as J025157.5+600606. STS109-E-5700 (9 March 2002) --- The Hubble Space Telescope, sporting new solar arrays and other important but less visible new hardware, begins its separation from the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Hubble’s near-infrared imaging, combined with ultraviolet views, provides a unique panchromatic look that offers insights into the altitude and distribution of the planet’s haze and particles. KK 246, also known as ESO 461-036, is a dwarf irregular galaxy residing within the Local Void, a vast region of empty space.

The NASA Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and ESA. The nebula is situated more than 160 000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighbouring dwarf irregular galaxy that orbits the Milky Way.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has once again observed the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov. Lying in the constellation Cetus (The Sea Monster), the galaxy’s outer region appears almost translucent, pinpricked with stars and strange wispy tendrils. TheNASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is no stranger to spiral galaxies. The name of the supernova remnant comes from its position in the northern constellation of Cygnus (The Swan), where it covers an area 36 times larger than the full moon. The galaxy known as NGC 5907 stretches wide across this image. Aside from its dazzling good looks, this cluster of stars contains lots of astronomical treats that have helped astronomers puzzle together the lifetimes of stars.

AURA’s Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, conducts Hubble science operations. This image, taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, depicts a special class of star-forming nursery known as Free-floating Evaporating Gaseous Globules, or frEGGs for short. This means that its spiral arms are not clearly distinguishable from each other, as in grand design spiral galaxies, but are instead patchy and discontinuous.

While appearing as a delicate and light veil draped across the sky, this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope actually depicts a small section of the Cygnus supernova blast wave, located around 2400 light-years away. The galaxy resides about 200 million light-years from Earth and is nestled in the southern constellation of Eridanus (The River). Seen here in incredible detail, thanks to the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, is the starburst galaxy formally known as PLCK G045.1+61.1. Results from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have found that an intense flash from the Milky Way’s black hole illuminated gas far outside of our galaxy approximately 3.5 million years ago. xmlns:xsl='http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform'">.
