Books go so much deeper into the characters' lives and personalities than is served by what you see on the movie screen, and this book is no exception. The homophobia scene was just clumsily thrown in there for no reason rather than being dealt with in a meaningful manner, or having any relevance to the plot. And it is very well done and very well perform by the actors who played in it. To my opinion, there may have been a good idea at the start, but it ends up being an overrated, grotesque movie, that tries to mix together tons of classics dressed up as an art avant-garde original film. Both the merman and the main female character desperately needed fleshing out in terms of their characterisation if we were expected to believe in their relationship and feel any emotion towards, or investment in, them. I always like the bad guy to loose big in the end! "[A] phenomenally enrapturing and reverberating work of art in its own right...[that] vividly illuminates the minds of the characters, greatly enhancing our understanding of their temperaments and predicaments and providing more expansive and involving story lines." Having previously directed Hellboy, Del Toro uses what clearly was gleaned from that film and infused those elements into this one. The art direction and film score is a plain copy (but poorly executed) of Amelie. Having read the insights into the characters from different perspectives, it will make seeing the film again a better experience. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones. The special features will help you understand how these things worked and made me want to watch the movie a second time in order to see those elements employed. In "The Shape of Water", Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus adapt the story of del Toro's 2017 film, but this is so much more than your typical novelization of a film. Slightly wish there was more romantic entanglements but the simplicity in the romance is what makes it so perfect. This movie is a depiction of our society today. It had so many elements I thought I would love—the focus on water, a director who’s work I have enjoyed in the past, a monster love story, inclusive casting; all of these things sounded great on paper. I do like Del Toro; his best movies are absolutely top drawer- best fantasy “Pan’s Labyrinth” a strong candidate; best ghost story “The Devil’s Backbone” best comic book adaptation “Hellboy”; best vampire movie “Cronos”; best giant robot movie “Pacific Rim”; all candidates for the best in class, although the last is really beneath him, as it’s a genre of mostly crap anyway.
