First read this book in my high school English class when I was about fifteen and was blown away by it's honesty and insight. The story took a while to really hook me, but by the end I felt like I had a real connection to some of the characters.

I was always aware that there were gangs around and that they fought each other and got into trouble, but they never impacted my life. Despite the fact, that not anyone in the group is fond of one another, but they still can do anything for the sake of each other, for their protection. It's a story with a lot of heart and well-developed characters. I was halfway through the book before I learned that it had been written by a young girl. its a good audio book I used it for a book report type sort of thing . The book “The Outsiders” really gives a very good outline of characters, having a mix with humor, suspense, and excitement. Mainly, I was worried my students would not be able to identify with the characters in the novel. Hinton was only 18 when the novel was published. I wasn't sure what to expect, but found myself pleasantly surprised.
