This was my first trip from Lobster Buoy Campground.

We paddled south around the island to my favorite lunch beach (I'm pretty sure it's private so I won't mention the name). Established in 1804, it is one of Maine's oldest light stations, with its present tower built in 1852 to a design attributed to Alexander Parris. While we did hit some sunny places, for the most part, GPS and charts got us there.

The funny part is we were crossing the channel from the tip of Seal Harbor Head and were dead heading to the back side of the Whitehead where I had lunched on a spit of sand on a mid tide. Today, the Fresnel lens is on display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, Maine. The fog was so thick you couldn't see 100 feet in front of you. The lighthouse, light-keeper and his family became the center of attention on the island. We paddled in the fog (it was dense - visibility was about a hundred feet).

Whitehead Island (so named for its granite boulders along the shore) is located in Penobscot Bay at the western entrance to the Muscle Ridge Channel.

With the addition of a school house, the light-station became the hub of the community within the Penobscot Bay Islands. Whitehead Light was built on the island in 1807.

Although the lighthouse is not open for official tours, the freshly refurbished keeper's house offers a charming place for a wide variety of adult programs and is available for rent during certain times of the year. GPS was telling us the White Head Island was about 80 feet in front of us and my partner has me starting to wonder what exactly has happened.
