Turn right over the stile (half-hidden in the hedge) and then turn left to follow the hedge line on the left. The White Hart is believed to date from the 1500s, and is one of the oldest properties in the village. As you approach the trees you'll reach a fork, keep left and after just a few paces you'll reach a waymark post with the Mill Bourne stream directly ahead. Follow the lane past cottages and continue to the end with Yew Tree Cottage ahead. The oak trees had the dual purpose of providing shelter for domestic animals, whilst providing wood from the branches of the pollards, which were cut above the browse line about every twenty years. Some of the stiles have dog gates, but a couple of the tall stiles towards the end of the walk have tight fence surrounds so dogs may need a lift over. Follow the road for just 300 yards where you will reach a chevron sign marking a left-hand bend.
Ignore the first side path (immediately before the bend and alongside the waypost), instead take the second side path on the right. Turn right along Broadford Lane, a concrete track, and follow this for some distance. This is a delightful 6-mile easy walk across the south side of Chobham Common, which hopefully has not been affected to any great extent by the recent fire that has devastated the north side of the Common - watch out for updates. These magnificent trees may be more than 300 years old and may be home to more than 280 species of insect.
